OUR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

MEGA COMPUTER TRAINING, COMPUTER SETS DONATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR YOUTHS IN GOMBE

This project has been concluded successfully

MISSION

To build the capacity of students and people from rural underserved communities, equip and empower them with practical ICT soft skills that are basic and critical for self-reliance and employability across the local government and communities.

Theory of Change

In Sub Saharan Africa, 230 million jobs will require digital skills by 2030, according to the Digital Skills in Sub-Saharan Africa report that IFC recently published. This translates into an opportunity estimated at $130 billion to provide digital skills through a combination of business-to-consumer, business-to-business, and business-to-government training services. The status quo is unacceptable. Only 50 percent of countries in Africa have ‘computer’ skills as part of their school curriculum, compared to 85 percent of countries globally. The majority of the Nigerian populations dwell in rural settlements, hence not opportune to seek self or community development resulting in an increased rate of poverty, redundancy and other vices.

There are not many standard computer training centers in the Gombe Local government, and a huge fraction of its dwellers are not knowledgeable in ICT. Possible barriers to the adoption of IT are and not restricted to:

  • Low awareness of the benefits of IT,
  • Distance of training centers from interested individuals, and
  • Concerns over the cost of using IT solutions.

Most public schools in Gombe town despite having a well-equipped ICT unit lack qualified instructors, this has resulted in little or no practical knowledge on the path of the students who eventually understand nothing of what is taught in the schools except they make extra efforts and pay extra fees to acquire these experiences.

To address these issues, the applicant will host information sessions to raise awareness of the benefits of IT and encourage the development of IT partnerships and alliances as a low-cost way of utilizing IT tools.
